They acquired this codec as part of their purchase of On2 Technologies. As there's a great deal of talk now that it should be open-sourced, will be open-sourced, and used as part of the HTML5 standard for video, a port of this codec would be beneficial to AmigaOS users.

Update: Google has opened VP8 and called it WebM.
